Cybercrime/Digital Forensic Investigation & Prosecution

At the heart of every crime scene, where and when gathering evidence is at issue, there exist two basic questions the investigator must address: how would the investigator find and acquire the evidence and how would he properly document them, when found? While physical evidence is tangible, visible, categorised and simple to collect, digital evidence poses some unique challenges. Digital evidence can exist in places you never thought possible. Cloud computing makes things even more complicated. The computer system is made up of components that collectively define its efficiency and effectiveness. These components consist amongst others, the operating system concepts, registry structures, file system concepts, boot process, and file operations. The digital forensics investigator, the prosecutor and the defence counsel must familiarise themselves with the basic understanding of these concepts. If anything, the knowledge builds a resource base of information for use while in court proceedings, either in leading a witness or in cross-examination of a witness.
