Legal Analytics & Innovation

This certificate program shows students how to apply smart data analysis to legal problems. The practice of law today has changed in many unpredictable ways. Law firms now use the computing powers to do virtually everything from billing clients to analysing case law. The Advanced Certificate of proficiency in Legal Analytics & Innovation, that DECFI offers gives participants an edge. Students pursuing Advanced Certificate of Proficiency in Legal Analytics & Innovation have the chance to participate in a number of research, experiential learning through our Legal Analytics Lab.

Our goal is to imbue our students with the capability to understand the process of extracting actionable knowledge from data, to distinguish themselves in legal proceedings involving data or analysis, and assist in firm and in-house management, including case forecasting, process improvement, resource management, and financial operations. You will learn basic concepts in machine learning / data. At a minimum, we believe that this training will make you a more well-rounded 21st Century professional.

  • Students learn to identify patterns, using big data analytics, including text mining, machine learning, image analysis and other methodologies to produce research. They unlock insights from thousands of pages of text, using computational techniques.
  • They work with faculty, law firms and companies to help organizations examine predictive results from volumes of documents and other data.
  • Quantify type and frequency of case outcomes to predict future outcomes.
  • Students examine analytics tools to leverage emerging technologies in law practices as informed consumers and competent technology partners.

Certificate Requirements

Students must be in good academic standing, based on the successful completion of the first full Certificate of proficiency course in Digital Evidence and eDiscovery Law Practice offered by the Institute or any other recognized Institute by DECFI.

Quantitative Methods for Lawyers is the first course in a two-course sequence and it assumes no prior knowledge of statistics / quantitative thinking. You will learn basic concepts and will receive an introduction to R (the open source programming language which is lingua franca of statistical computing). Those with a prior knowledge of statistics, etc. might be advised to simply start with our Legal Analytics course (which is a primer in machine learning / advanced analytics for lawyers).
