Digital forensic investigation is commonly deployed as a post-event response to data security breach or criminal incident. Its most common goal is to support or refute a hypothesis before criminal or civil (as part of the electronic discovery process) courts with a view to establishing that a particular digital event that initiated interruption and commanded invocations or process termination, maliciously changed the state of one or more digital objects such as a file, a hard disk sector or a network packet. Because the process or procedure adopted in performing digital forensic investigation would have direct influence on the outcome of the investigation, it becomes imperative that a process model in digital forensic examination that would interact with the physical investigations that have long existed be put in place.

The Focus of this Module

Choosing inappropriate investigative processes may lead to inaccurate result. Not adhering to compliance or switching any of the steps in the investigative procedure may lead to inconclusive and invalid conclusions. Evidence captured in an ad hoc or unstructured manner loses its integrity and risks not being admissible in court. This weekly module sets out to bring into focus different process models and technique that have evolved over time with a view to setting global standards generally acceptable in the gathering of digital evidence and forensic investigation.
