Locating and Protecting Electronically-Stored Data in Digital Investigation. See Chapter 33 of the book for further reading

As more users go mobile and utilise interconnected devices, they, more often than not, found themselves at the centre of incidents and investigations. At the heart of every crime scene, where and when gathering evidence is at issue, there exist two basic questions the investigator must address: how would the investigator find and acquire the evidence and how would he properly document them, when found? While physical evidence is tangible, visible, categorised and simple to collect, digital evidence poses some unique challenges. Digital evidence can exist in places you never thought possible. Cloud computing makes things even more complicated. There is a staggering amount of data in the Cloud and knowing where evidence may be stored in such a huge repository is a herculean task for investigators. Whatever the case, wherever the evidence is located, finding it is essential to building a viable solid case.

The Focus of this Module

In an attempt to find and locate such data, certain indicators do suggest to the investigators where data, not ever imagined, could be located. This weekly module locates and analyses such indicators.
